Day Eight: Grants and hiking Mount Taylor

Pictures the hike of Mount Taylor.

There is absolutely no reason to stay at Grants. Unless you need a hotel room (there are several to stay at that are not boarded up and look habitable). There is practically no place to eat outside the hotel (we found one - La Hacienda which was excellent).

Yet nearby, there is plenty of hiking. For some reason, we decided to pick Mount Taylor. Most of the towns we stayed at were above 5000 feet, with a few up at 8000. So we hoped that we had adjusted to the altitude. Because our hike to Mount Taylor started at about 9000 feet and ended up at 11,300!

Did you know that New Mexico has more deaths due to lightening per capita than any other state in the US? We found that out and after we got to the top, we noticed a barely threatening cloud heading our way. That got us moving down real fast. Later, severe thunderstorms moved in.

From there, we headed to Albuquerque, a boring evening of shopping in Old Town, and a flight home the next day.
