Accreditation is a voluntary process used to ensure that an institution meets recognized standards. An accrediting agency is an independent body charged with objectively determining whether an organization meets these professional standards.
Accreditation communicates to the public that an institution has met accepted standards and assures prospective students that the courses and programs offered are of high quality and value.
The Animal Behavior Institute, Inc. is accredited and/or approved by three independent, professional associations:
In addition, ABI programs are listed with the Delta Society (a nonprofit organization dedicated to service and therapy animals), and with the Center for Respect for Life and Environment. We publish articles on animal behavior, training and education such as this example from Lab Animal.

The Animal Behavior Institute is proud to be accredited as an Authorized Provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). In obtaining this approval, ABI has demonstrated that it complies with the standards of IACET and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) - widely recognized as the international standards of sound educational practice. The accreditation process required a rigorous evaluation and assessment of all educational practices, including instructor qualifications and training, outcomes assessment, grading, delivery and course construction.
As a result of our Authorized Provider status, ABI is authorized to offer IACET Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Each course at ABI provides 6 credits of CEU that can be used for maintenance of professional affiliation with an institution or professional advancement in related organizations. For example, professionals in health care or therapy might use credits provided in our Animal Assisted Therapy program to fulfill their annual continuing education requirements. Sample associations accepting the IACET CEU include:
- American Association of Respiratory Therapy
- American Board of Medical Microbiology
- American Nurses Association
- American Occupational Therapy Association
- American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science
- American Speech-Language-Hearing Association
Hundreds of professional associations, technical colleges, civic institutions, and community colleges accept the IACET CEU, for a more complete listing see the IACET registry.
The International Association for Continuing Education and Training is a non-profit association dedicated to quality continuing education and training programs. IACET certification is the standard learners seek for quality; their criteria are the core of thousands of educational programs worldwide. Acceptance as an authorized provider recognizes that an institution:
- Demonstrates compliance with proven, research-based standards created in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Education.
- Is dedicated to high standards for quality in continuing education and training.
- Awards the IACET CEU, the hallmark for quality in continuing education and training.

Licensed veterinarians and veterinary technicians require ongoing continuing education in order to maintain their license in good standing.
The American Association of Veterinary State Boards' Registry of Approved Continuing Education also reviews and approves ABI programs. Selected courses are pre-approved for use as continuing education credits for veterinarians and veterinary technicians.
(ABI provider number = 238)
Each course approved meets the requirements for 30 hours of continuing education credit in all jurisdictions that recognize AAVSB's RACE approval. However, participants should be aware that some boards have limitation on the number of hours accepted in certain categories and/or restrictions of certain methods of delivery of continuing education.
